A California court of Appeals has ruled that the telephone company has a legal right to refuse to hire gays, according to The Sexual Law Reporter. The plaintiffs argued that because the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company was a monopoly it should be prohibited from discriminating arbitrarily in its employment process. However, the court said the state had not interferred with the private hiring of homosexuals but had remained neutral, and there was no constitutional issue. It added that the California Supreme Court had found discrimination against blacks to be against the "strong policy of this state" but that "no such policy with reference to homosexuals has been enunciated...

The Body Politic reports that Anita Bryant was almost hailed "Religious Hypocrite of the Year" at an Easter-weekend convention of the American Atheists in Chicago. Bryant, along with fellow runner-up Jimmy Carter, lost the award to former Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver, a newly "born-again Christian." During the convention Madalyn Murray O'Hare said that she was heartened to see atheism "coming out of the closet." She cited author Truman Capote as one of several luminaries who has recently come out as atheist... GCN reports a bill has been introduced into the Texas legislature that would ban homosexual organizations from state-supported universities...

Also from GCN: University of Michigan students have overwhelmingly endorsed an amendment to student government regulations which would prohibit discrimination because of sexual preference. The vote in the campus-wide election was 1,041 to 314 in favor of gay rights inclusion.

In keeping with the plea of the National Gay Task Force for lesbian participation in the IWY conference to be held in every state, culminating in a national conference in Houston in November, the N.O.W. Sexuality. Task Force is urging all of its members and all of the lesbians of Ohio to attend the Ohio IWY Conference in Columbus, at the Fairgrounds, starting 8:00 a.m. on June 11th and 12th. The only way we can direct the resolutions coming from the workshops towards specific legal action in the areas of legislation and civil rights is by our active participation. Finally, on a positive note, Senator Edward Kennedy (DMass.) has announced the support for the pending federal gay rights legislation. In clusive statement to the Gay Community News, Kennedy said, "Discrimination in employment not only jeopardizes the individual rights of those threatened with job loss, but is a waste of potential talent at a time when our country is facing serious problems in every area of economic growth and social change."

CIRCUIT

CLEVELAND Oven Productions, the Case Western Reserve University Women's Center, and Moonforce Media, Inc. present the second series of the National Women's Film Circuit in Cleveland. The Circuit is a nationwide series of showings of films by and about women and represents the finest in feminist filmmaking today. The. films were selected from over 100 entries in the Circuit

Festival held in Washington, D.C. in August, 1975. The six films which will be shown cover a wide variety of subject matters and filmmaking styles.

The premier of the Circuit was reviewed by Sister, a Los Angeles newspaper, as follows: "It presents women as involved in a process of changing and wanting to change their conditions. The whole package is

positive and hopeful."

The films will be shown on Friday, May 20 and Saturday May 21, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The showings will be at Schmitt Auditorium on the CWRU campus (enter from Adelbert Rd.). Moonforce Media, Inc. is a Washington, D.C. based nonprofit feminist enterprise formed promote, distribute, and produce films by and about women. Moonforce strives to create a strong, self-sustaining feminist media by making films available to wider wider audiences and by encouraging people to support media which reflect their own analysis of society and desire for change.

Oven Productions is a local non-profit feminist production company which produces many cultural events in the Cleveland area. Their next production will be a dance with Be Be K'roche, a women's band, in early June. The CWRU Women's Center offers activities and support for women on the campus. They often co-sponsor cultural events with Oven Productions.

Informal discussion over wine and cheese by both younger and older persons was enthusiastic and serious, and suggested realistic aims were called "exciting." Commitment on the part of each member and Chapter was readily recognized and agreed upon. The Chapter determines to work in close cooperation with similar groups such as Dignity and Integrity.

An initial Steering Committee was selected which began its work the following week. The Chapter sees the need first to establish its stance and achieve some strength and recognition State-wide before dividing into Chapters within various areas of the state. Arrangements are currently underway for displays of information regarding homosexuality and literature from Lutherans Concerned at both the Ohio Synod, Lutheran Church in America and the Ohio District, American Lutheran Church, both of which meet in June..

The Chapter decided to meet monthly, and scheduled the next meeting on May 28, with a Celebration of the Eucharist on Pentecost Sunday, May 29, each to take place at First Church in Dyaton.
